Seriously!? Over some yummy Indian food today my friend told me a story about a horrible experience she had with a job board. She posted her resume and received a lot of great responses. One in particular seemed too good to be true and of course it was. The story is that they sent her a really great job description that matched her interests spot on, had several phone conversations with her and then just when she was on the verge of interviewing she found out that it actually was a pyramid scheme. What broke the facade was her insistence on learning the company's name. They had dodged the bullet in email and on the phone and when she finally put her foot down and the contact gave her the company name she found through a web search that they were frauds. It was actually an attempt to get her to buy / sell some sort of product. If she hadn't been vigilant and smelled a rat she could very well be selling Amway right now :)
I'm not naive. I know these things happen, but I didn't think that someone would use a job board in this way. Though its obvious that many of the job descriptions that are put on these boards are fraudulent I thought they were used for lead generation rather then actually swindling people out of their money. What a shameful thing to do to people who are already in a vulnerable situation - in the throws of a job search.
Why care? I think this underscores my recent rants and the need for quality control in job postings. With my friend's example she was incensed enough to actually call the job board and alert them to this scheme. Their response - sorry, nothing we can do about this. Again, seriously?! They just lost her business and at the same time continue to expose their clients and consumers to harm. Pretty shady in my book.
