When Zoe and I advise jobseekers, we recommend they create and then take their own interview practice exam. Build a list of commonly asked interview questions and practice answering these questions. Personally, I hate mock interviews or role-playing situations. As the interviewee, I always know it's "mock" so it's hard for me to be my real self. The mock experience is way more forced and nerve-racking .. at least, that's what I think. So when I advise jobseekers on practice interviews, one thing I stress is that you don't necessarily have to do mock interviews. You could just practice in front of a mirror or video yourself and show it to no one else. I honestly think this is just as effective.
Well, I just read on download squad about a web cam mock interviewing program, InterviewTrue. Choose from pre-selected or random questions, answer away, and then watch yourself. If you want, you can take it a step further and share the video with someone who can give you feedback or attach it along with your application. But I'm still on the fence with that latter use. As much as you know Zoe and I love how social media can help employers connect with potential employees, jobseekers using videos to convince employers to hire them still give me the creeps a bit. Maybe it's that I know - or at least hope - that employers have trained professionals on staff who know how to use video properly. I've seen jobseekers struggle much more, and I'm not sure what I would do if a candidate sent me a webcam recorded video of him answering cheesy interview questions. Scary.
Anyway, this program has a free trial. I might give it a shot to see what it's all about. Anyone else interested in taking it for a test drive and reporting back?
