Are you interested in getting in on the ground floor of a new company? Check out this article on "How Job Hunters Can Woo Venture Capitalists" from WSJ's CareerJournal.com.
The article cites some good tips for networking your way into the hearts of venture firms. The best piece of advice they offer is that you can't just send your resume to these people and hope that they may call you one day. You have to be able to demonstrate that you have a strong business idea - not one that necessarily get's funding - but that shows you have good business sense, industry savvy and technology chops. While your idea may not be picked up initially, they may offer you the opportunity to "incubate" within their confines, potentially be able to connect you with like-minded inventors, or actually place you in a position within one of their existing start ups.
I'm bullish on small companies these days. Unlike early era dot bombs, I think that there are many tech start ups that are worth their weight in gold in terms of a strong employment propositions, career paths and business plans. If this is a path you are considering, think about alternate ways to introduce yourself to some of the key players within the firm either through your own business ideas or your personal networks. Who knows, you may end up the CEO of the next tech empire.
