how hiring managers can hire the best of the best

GretchenOver on ERE, Kevin Wheeler writes an open letter to Hiring Managers to ensure you are hiring the best of the best.  My favorite tidbits of Kevin's advice include:

  1. Learn about the recruiting marketplace.  You know Zoe and I love to harp on this one!  If you don't understand what's out there and who's a realistic catch, it's difficult to evaluate and calibrate various candidates.
  2. Get to know your recruiter.  Trust me - the better relationship you have with your recruiter, the better attention and candidates you'll receive.  It doesn't necessarily mean the recruiter will like you better and play favorites ... it just means you and your recruiter will "get" each other ... and that makes it a whole lot easier for everyone.
  3. Get to know your best performers.  When I'm working on a new opening, the first thing I ask the hiring manager to do is share with me some resumes or profiles of his top performers.  Oftentimes, top performers share similar backgrounds or strengths, and uncovering those puzzle pieces will help me build an even better candidate profile.

What tricks have you learned to build a stronger partnership with your recruiter and hire great candidates?
